Identification and Selection

The selection criteria used by the College to place students in full-time classes is multi-faceted and based upon recommendations of a number of researchers, particularly Rogers (2002) and Borland (1989). Students’ total profile, including cognitive ability, academic achievement and personal identifiers are considered when selecting students for gifted programs.

“It is important to insist that the process of identification in programs for the gifted be conceived as a matter of placing students in appropriate programs, not one of labelling them. Making decisions about a child’s educational placement is a task well within the capability of educators. Deciding if a child will become a gifted human being is a much more difficult task,” (Borland, 1989, p. 97).
